Generation 180, a non-profit with a mission to inspire people to take action on clean energy, partnered with The Solar Foundation to study the use of solar in schools and maximize its potential. In September 2020, they released the third edition of Brighter Future: A Study on Solar in U.S. Schools. This is the most comprehensive study on solar at K-12 schools nationwide. They found that more that 7,300 schools had already made the switch to solar. A decision not only great for the environment but also for their budgets.

Batesville School District in Arkansas is a great example of how solar can improve the quality of schools.

In 2017, out of the five districts in their county, they were paying the lowest salaries to their teachers and couldn’t retain their staff. At the time, their utilities cost over $600,000 annually.

‍

They partnered with Entegrity, an energy services company, to install 759 kW of solar on their campuses. They also started an initiative with teachers to conserve energy and earn raises. Since installing the 1,483 solar panels, the district has saved nearly $100,000 every year. By using solar and conserving energy, they anticipate a $4 million savings over 20 years.

With the money they have saved from installing solar, they have given pay raises as high as $9,000 a year to their employees.

“Thanks to this project and other strategic cost reductions, the district went from a $250,000 budget deficit to a $1.8 million surplus within three years. Now the district ranks first in teacher pay out of the five districts in the county.” - Generation 180
