Homeowners Insurance
Because your panels are now part of your home, most insurance policies will cover them! If Sunrun PPAs are not offered in your area or another financing option works better for your home, check with your insurance to see if it's covered. If it is, no separate solar panel insurance is needed (yay!). Be sure to check if you should increase your coverage amount. You may also need to check that all threats are covered, including extreme winds. However, permanent rooftop panels should be covered from all the same threats as your home.
Insurance Riders
If you purchased your panels and they could not be mounted to your roof, you may need additional insurance to cover them. In extreme circumstances, ground mounts and carport systems are more likely to be damaged so some homeowners insurances ask that you get additional coverage through an insurance rider. An insurance rider is an optional add-on to your current policy. The good news is, they typically have lower deductibles and are relatively less expensive.
